sevendayweekender – Wigan Athletic have strengthened their attacking options by signing former Republic of Ireland striker Scott Hogan on a short-term contract until January. The 34-year-old forward arrives as the club look to improve their attacking output following a slow start to the League One campaign.
Hogan left MK Dons at the end of last season after spending the 2024-25 campaign with the club. He initially joined MK Dons on a free transfer from Birmingham City in October 2024. But his time there produced limited goalscoring returns.
The experienced striker scored only once for MK Dons last season, with that goal coming almost a year ago. Wigan will nevertheless hope his experience can provide an additional attacking option as they look to improve their form in League One.
Hogan has enjoyed a long career across the English football pyramid and made his name during his time with Brentford in the Championship. His performances for the Bees eventually attracted the attention of Aston Villa. Who signed him in January 2017 for a reported £9 million fee that could rise to £12 million.
Hogan Brings Extensive Championship Experience
Before establishing himself at Brentford. Hogan had spells with Rochdale and other clubs as he worked his way through the English football system. His career has also included periods with Aston Villa. Stoke City and Sheffield United, giving him extensive experience at different levels of the professional game.
Hogan also represented the Republic of Ireland at international level, adding another layer of experience to Wigan’s squad. His arrival gives the club a forward who has previously competed in the Championship and experienced high-pressure matches during his career.
Wigan will now hope Hogan can rediscover his goalscoring form during his short spell at the club. His contract currently runs until January. Giving the Latics an experienced option in attack while they attempt to improve their position in League One.
Although Hogan’s recent scoring record has been modest, his previous experience at clubs such as Brentford and Aston Villa makes him a notable addition to Wigan’s squad. The striker has spent much of his career competing in the English Football League and has previously demonstrated his ability to contribute goals at different levels.
Hogan’s arrival also gives Wigan greater depth in the attacking department. His experience could prove useful during a demanding period of fixtures. Particularly when the club needs additional options in the final third. The forward will now look to settle quickly into his new surroundings and build a strong partnership with his teammates.
