sevendayweekender – Rochdale have strengthened their defence by signing experienced centre-back Aden Flint on a short-term deal until January. The 37-year-old joins the League Two side following his release by Walsall and brings extensive experience from across the English football pyramid.
Flint spent last season with Walsall and played in all but two of the club’s matches during the campaign. The defender has previously represented Bristol City, Middlesbrough and Cardiff City, giving him considerable experience in both the Championship and League One.
The move gives Rochdale an experienced option at the heart of their defence as they continue their first League Two campaign since returning to the English Football League. Dale secured promotion from the National League during the 2025-26 season but have made a difficult start to life back in the EFL.
The defender’s arrival provides additional depth at the back and gives Rochdale. Another option as they look to handle the demands of a long League Two campaign. His experience could also prove valuable for a squad adapting to the increased competitiveness and physical demands of the EFL.
Rochdale will hope the new arrival can settle quickly and build an understanding with his defensive teammates. Greater competition for places could also give the coaching staff more flexibility when selecting the back line for upcoming fixtures.
The club’s return to the EFL represents an important stage in its recent development. And maintaining consistency will be a key focus throughout the campaign. The experienced defender will now have the opportunity to contribute to that effort while helping Rochdale strengthen their defensive options.
Flint Ready to Help Rochdale
Rochdale have won just one of their opening five League Two matches this season. Making defensive experience particularly valuable as the club looks to establish itself back in the division.
Flint admitted that the wait for his next opportunity had been frustrating but said he was pleased to have secured a move to Rochdale. “It’s been a frustrating summer waiting for the right opportunity and I’m grateful to come and play here,” Flint said.
The veteran defender also highlighted the experience he can bring to the Rochdale squad, both on and off the pitch. He added that he was looking forward to helping the team and using his experience to support the club’s players.
