Richards is understood to be considering either signing an extension soon or postponing negotiations until after the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old remains on the original contract he signed after joining Palace from FC Bayern Munich in 2022 for just over £10 million.

Richards Has Become Key Figure at Selhurst Park

Richards has developed into a regular starter and one of Palace’s most reliable defensive players during a historic season for the club.

The United States international has played more than 4,000 minutes across 48 appearances in all competitions.

His importance increased significantly after fellow defender Marc Guéhi left Palace to join Manchester City in January.

Since then, Richards has become one of the leaders of Palace’s back line and a central figure in the team’s defensive structure.

The defender has also helped Palace reach the first European final in the club’s history.

The London side will face Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Europa Conference League Final on 27 May.

World Cup Could Influence Contract Decision

Richards is also expected to play a major role for the United States men’s national soccer team at the 2026 World Cup.

With much of the tournament taking place in the United States. The World Cup could significantly increase both his profile and market value.

That situation may partly explain why discussions over a new contract remain delicate.

Although Richards is reportedly happy at Selhurst Park. Any new agreement would likely need to reflect his increased status within the squad.

Palace Facing Important Summer Changes

Securing Richards’ future could become even more important because Palace are expected to undergo major changes this summer.

Maintaining defensive stability may therefore become a priority for the club’s leadership.

Andoni Iraola, currently head coach of AFC Bournemouth, is reportedly the preferred candidate to replace Glasner.

With managerial uncertainty and several important players attracting attention. Palace appear eager to secure the long-term future of Richards before the start of next season.

Given his growing influence at both club and international level. Richards now appears set to become one of the central figures in Palace’s future plans.
