Ashby arrives with previous experience of working under Wilshere during their time together at West Ham United. A connection that played a significant role in convincing the defender to make the move to Kenilworth Road.

Reunion with Jack Wilshere Influenced Transfer Decision

Ashby and Wilshere were both at West Ham between 2018 and 2020. When the defender was progressing through the club’s academy system.

Speaking after completing the loan switch, Ashby admitted that reuniting with his former mentor made the decision straightforward.

“Being with him at West Ham, it was a bit of a little reunion for us. And after five minutes I said to my agent, ‘yes, I want to be here’,” Ashby told Luton Town’s official website.

The defender also praised Wilshere’s understanding of his strengths both on and off the pitch.

“The main thing is he knows what kind of character I am already. And he knows what kind of player I am as well.”

“So I think straightaway the philosophy matches my playing style. Which is perfect for me, and I think I can slot into the team and help them straight away.”

Defender Brings Valuable League One Experience

Although Ashby has yet to make a senior appearance for Newcastle United, he has accumulated valuable experience through loan spells.

The former Scotland Under-21 international spent the second half of last season with Bradford City, helping the club reach the League One play-offs through a series of consistent performances.

His experience at the level is expected to prove valuable as Luton look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Ashby originally joined Newcastle from West Ham United in 2023 in a transfer worth up to £3 million.

Despite waiting for his first competitive appearance for the Magpies, the full-back remains highly regarded for his attacking qualities, work rate, and versatility on the right flank.

The season-long loan gives Ashby another opportunity to gain regular first-team football while continuing his development under a manager who already knows his abilities.

For Luton Town, the addition of Harrison Ashby provides increased competition at right-back and adds a player familiar with the demands of English football as the Hatters prepare for the challenges of the new season.
