sevendayweekender – Bristol City have completed the signing of versatile midfielder Sam Greenwood from Polish side Pogon Szczecin on a four-year contract for an undisclosed transfer fee.
The 24-year-old becomes the Robins’ first signing of the summer as new head coach Michael Skubala begins shaping his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Greenwood arrives after a season in Poland. Where he made 22 league appearances for Pogon Szczecin and scored three goals following his move to the club in August.
Greenwood Reunites with Former Leeds Coach
The move also reunites Greenwood with Michael Skubala. Who previously worked with the midfielder during their time together at Leeds United.
Greenwood joined Leeds from Arsenal’s academy in 2020 and went on to make 35 senior appearances for the Yorkshire club.
His most active campaign came during the 2022-23 Premier League season, when he featured 18 times in England’s top flight.
In addition to his time at Leeds. Greenwood has gained valuable Championship experience through loan spells with Middlesbrough and Preston North End.
Those experiences have helped him accumulate close to 300 senior appearances despite still being only 24 years old.
Skubala Praises Greenwood’s Versatility and Experience
Bristol City head coach Michael Skubala believes Greenwood will add quality, versatility and valuable experience to his midfield options.
Describing his first summer signing, Skubala said Greenwood is a player with the ability to operate in several positions across the pitch. “He’s a really exciting talent,” Skubala said.
“He’s not a striker, he’s a midfielder, but he’s a 24-year-old that probably has a point to prove that he can still get back to the Premier League, so he’s hungry.”
The Bristol City manager also highlighted Greenwood’s experience at senior level despite his relatively young age.
“But he’s also played almost 250-300 games at senior level. Not only is he a talent, not only is he going to add to that unit and be competitive with that unit as well. But he’s played a lot of senior football so he’s experienced.”
Greenwood’s arrival provides Bristol City with a technically gifted midfielder capable of filling multiple roles while bringing experience from the Premier League, Championship and Polish Ekstraklasa.
As the Robins’ first signing of the transfer window, the club will hope Greenwood’s versatility. Creativity and desire to prove himself can help strengthen the squad as they target a successful season under Skubala’s leadership.
