Sydney vs. Melbourne Coffe Shop: Which City Truly Brews the Best Coffee?

Australia’s coffee culture has gained worldwide recognition, with cafés setting global trends and baristas constantly innovating to perfect every cup. While Sydney and Melbourne both claim to be the country’s coffee capital, their rivalry has intensified in recent years.

The Origins of Melbourne’s Coffee Dominance

For decades, Melbourne has held the title of Australia’s coffee capital. Its rich coffee history dates back to the post-World War II era, when Italian immigrants brought espresso machines and café culture to the city. Over time, Melbourne’s specialty coffee scene grew, becoming synonymous with high-quality brews and expertly crafted espresso.

Internationally, Melbourne has long been recognized for its cafés, with many establishments expanding to major cities worldwide. Flat whites and avocado toast, both Australian café staples, have become global trends, though New Zealanders often contest the flat white’s origins.

Sydney’s Coffee Scene Rises to the Top

In recent years, Sydney’s coffee culture has gained momentum, challenging Melbourne’s dominance. In 2023, Food & Wine magazine ranked Sydney third on its list of the best coffee cities worldwide, while Melbourne placed tenth. This shift signaled a major win for Sydney’s growing reputation in the coffee industry.

Additionally, World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops recently crowned Sydney-based Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters as the world’s best coffee shop for 2025, surpassing Melbourne’s Proud Mary Coffee, which ranked fourth.

Despite the fierce competition, Australia as a whole stands out as a leader in specialty coffee. Jody Leslie, General Manager of Toby’s Estate, emphasized national pride over city rivalries. “Australian coffee is the best in the world. It’s not just about Sydney or Melbourne—we want to be strong as a country.”
