sevendayweekender – Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Santiago Bueno has joined Mexican side Club America on loan until the end of the season. The agreement also includes an option for Club America to make the Uruguay international’s move permanent.
The 27-year-old joined Wolves from Spanish club Girona in August 2023. He signed a five-year contract after establishing himself in Spanish football.
Bueno went on to make 70 Premier League appearances for Wolves across three seasons. He became a regular option in the club’s defence during his time in the English top flight.
The defender scored his first goal for Wolves last September. He found the net during a 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham.
Bueno also made 29 league appearances last season. Wolves were ultimately relegated to the Championship after spending eight consecutive years in the Premier League.
The Uruguay international did not feature for Wolves at the beginning of the current campaign. His absence came as the club managed its squad following relegation from the top flight.
Club America currently sit top of the Liga MX table. Bueno will therefore move to a team competing near the top of Mexico’s domestic league.
The loan provides Bueno with an opportunity to continue playing regularly after being left out of Wolves’ early-season plans. It also gives Club America the option to evaluate the defender before deciding whether to complete a permanent transfer.
Wolves technical director Matt Jackson explained that Bueno’s departure was complicated by the timing of the move. The club had already completed its domestic transfer business when other markets remained available.
Wolves Explain Bueno’s Departure
“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” Jackson told Wolves’ official website. The technical director said the club knew there were still open transfer markets that could suit Bueno.
“We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline,” Jackson said. The situation became more difficult because Wolves had more players than could be included in their 25-man squad.
“When we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out,” Jackson added. Bueno subsequently became the player to leave the club on loan.
The decision means Wolves will temporarily lose a defender with substantial Premier League experience. Bueno’s 70 appearances across three seasons provide him with considerable experience at the highest level of English football.
His move to Club America also comes with a potential long-term outcome. The Mexican club has an option to buy Bueno when the loan spell concludes.
For Wolves, the agreement provides a route for Bueno to continue his career elsewhere while remaining contracted to the English club. The option to buy could also lead to a permanent departure at the end of the season.
Bueno will now begin a new chapter in Mexico after three seasons with Wolves. His immediate objective will be securing regular football with Club America and contributing to their Liga MX campaign.
The defender’s future beyond the loan remains undecided. Club America’s option to buy means the Mexican club will ultimately have the opportunity to determine whether Bueno stays beyond the current season.
For now, Wolves will continue their Championship campaign without Bueno. The Uruguay international will instead focus on making an impact with Club America after his difficult start to the season in England.
