sevendayweekender – Aston Villa have completed the signing of West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka on a season-long loan. The agreement also includes a conditional obligation to buy the 28-year-old right-back. The clubs have not disclosed the financial terms or the conditions required to trigger the permanent transfer. West Ham had previously sought a fee of £25m from clubs interested in signing the defender.
The move takes Wan-Bissaka back to the Premier League after West Ham’s relegation last season. He missed West Ham’s opening two Championship matches while negotiations over his transfer continued. His departure now gives Villa another experienced option at right-back for the new campaign. The transfer also strengthens Unai Emery’s squad ahead of another demanding domestic and European schedule.
Wan-Bissaka joined West Ham from Manchester United in 2024 on a seven-year contract. He made 65 appearances for the London club across his two seasons. That total included 25 appearances last season as West Ham finished the campaign in the relegation places. West Ham’s drop into the Championship created uncertainty around the defender’s future during the summer.
Before joining West Ham, Wan-Bissaka spent five seasons with Manchester United. He made 190 appearances for United across all competitions during that period. He won the League Cup with United in 2023 under manager Erik ten Hag.
Wan-Bissaka began his senior career with Crystal Palace before establishing himself as a Premier League defender. His defensive ability and Premier League experience have made him a valuable squad option.
Villa’s decision also reflects their need for depth across several competitions this season.
Conditional Purchase Clause Could Decide Wan-Bissaka’s Long-Term Future
The structure of Wan-Bissaka’s move resembles another loan agreement completed by Villa last season. Villa signed Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy. That agreement required Elliott to play in 10 league matches before becoming permanent. He appeared in only four league games, so the permanent transfer condition was not fulfilled. Elliott subsequently returned to Liverpool during the summer.
The financial and sporting conditions attached to Wan-Bissaka’s agreement remain undisclosed. Those details will determine whether Villa eventually make his move permanent after the loan campaign. The arrangement gives Villa flexibility while allowing West Ham to retain a potential future transfer fee.
Wan-Bissaka also arrives at Villa after representing DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup. He started all four of his country’s matches during the tournament. DR Congo progressed to the round of 32 during the expanded competition. His international involvement provides further evidence of his current competitive experience.
Villa could hand Wan-Bissaka his debut against Brighton on Sunday at 14:00 BST. The match would provide an immediate opportunity for him to return to Premier League football. He will also be eligible to compete in the Champions League with Villa this season.
Villa secured a fourth-place league finish last season and also won the Europa League. Those achievements have created another busy schedule for Emery’s squad. The club therefore needed sufficient depth to manage domestic and European commitments. Wan-Bissaka’s arrival provides additional experience while the conditional purchase clause preserves flexibility.
