sevendayweekender – Hearts goalkeeper Liam McFarlane has joined Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle on loan for the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old goalkeeper moves after gaining regular senior experience with Alloa Athletic last season.
McFarlane spent the previous campaign on loan at Alloa and made 39 appearances. His performances helped the club compete for promotion to the Scottish Championship. However, Alloa ultimately missed out after losing the play-off final to Stenhousemuir.
The goalkeeper’s regular involvement provided valuable experience during an important stage of his development. McFarlane now returns to the Scottish Championship with Partick Thistle. The move gives him another opportunity to play competitive senior football.
His development also earned recognition at international level this summer. McFarlane travelled with Scotland to the World Cup as the team’s training goalkeeper. Although he did not feature as a match goalkeeper, the experience provided exposure to the national team’s senior environment.
The move to Partick Thistle gives McFarlane another chance to build on his experience from the previous campaign. His 39 appearances for Alloa represent a significant body of senior football for a goalkeeper aged 21.
Partick Thistle will benefit from adding a goalkeeper who already has regular competitive experience. McFarlane will also have the opportunity to compete for playing time in the Championship. The loan agreement covers the entire 2026-27 season.
For Hearts, the move provides another development opportunity for a young goalkeeper. McFarlane can continue gaining senior experience away from Tynecastle while remaining under the club’s ownership. His progress at Partick Thistle will be monitored throughout the season.
McFarlane Arrives After 39 Alloa Appearances and Scotland World Cup Role
McFarlane’s previous loan spell at Alloa was his most substantial period of senior football to date. He played 39 matches during the campaign as Alloa challenged for promotion. The club ultimately fell short in the play-offs.
Alloa reached the promotion play-off final against Stenhousemuir. Their campaign ended with defeat in that decisive match. Despite missing out on promotion, McFarlane gained extensive experience during the season.
Regular appearances are particularly valuable for young goalkeepers. The position requires consistency and decision-making that can develop through competitive matches. McFarlane’s time with Alloa therefore provided an important platform for his progression.
His summer involvement with Scotland added another significant experience. McFarlane travelled to the World Cup as a training goalkeeper. Being part of the national squad allowed him to work within an international environment alongside established players.
That experience followed his regular club football with Alloa. He now moves into another competitive season with Partick Thistle. The Scottish Championship will provide a different challenge after his previous campaign in the lower division.
Partick Thistle will hope McFarlane can bring the experience gained at Alloa into their squad. His 39 appearances give him a stronger senior record than many goalkeepers of the same age. The move also provides Hearts with another opportunity to develop his abilities through regular competition.
