sevendayweekender – Gateshead have completed the signing of promising defender Tommy Lavery on a two-year contract following his departure from Sunderland.

The 20-year-old right-back arrives after progressing through Sunderland’s academy. Where he spent more than a decade developing before leaving the Championship club this summer.

Although Lavery did not make a senior competitive appearance for the Black Cats. He gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells last season and now joins Gateshead looking to establish himself as a regular starter in the National League.

Young Defender Brings National League Experience

Lavery joined Sunderland’s academy at the age of nine and worked his way through the club’s youth system.

During the 2025-26 campaign, he spent the first part of the season on loan with Northern Ireland Premiership side Cliftonville before moving to National League outfit FC Halifax Town.

The defender made nine appearances in all competitions for Halifax. Gaining important experience in England’s fifth tier and adapting to the demands of senior football.

His performances convinced Gateshead to secure his services on a permanent basis as the club continues to strengthen its squad for the new season.

With regular first-team football now expected at Gateshead. Lavery will have another opportunity to continue his development and establish himself as a dependable defender. The move also offers him a platform to showcase his potential, gain consistent playing time. And contribute to the club’s ambitions throughout the upcoming National League campaign.

Lavery Ready for Fresh Challenge at Gateshead

Speaking after completing the move, Lavery believes his experiences over the past year have prepared him for the challenges ahead.

“I know what the National League is like now. I know how to win games,” he told the club’s official website.

“feel like I’ve got experience in the game from last year. So I 100% know what we need to do this year and I’ll help the team as much as possible.”

The young defender arrives with the ambition of becoming a key member of Gateshead’s back line while continuing his development through regular first-team football.

Capable of playing primarily at right-back, Lavery offers energy. Defensive discipline and experience gained from competitive football despite his young age.

His arrival provides Gateshead with another youthful addition as the club prepares for the upcoming National League campaign. While the former Sunderland academy graduate will be aiming to establish himself as an important figure in the Tynesiders’ squad over the next two seasons.
