sevendayweekender – Shrewsbury Town have re-signed goalkeeper Cameron Gregory on a short-term contract following an injury to second-choice goalkeeper Sam Proctor. The 19-year-old Aston Villa youngster has picked up a knock, leaving manager Gavin Cowan needing additional cover between the posts.
Gregory, 26, is expected to provide immediate cover for Shrewsbury and could go straight onto the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s League Two local derby against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road. The experienced goalkeeper returns to the club for his second spell.
Gregory Returns for His Second Shrewsbury Spell
Gregory previously came through the Shrewsbury academy as a teenager before leaving the club and developing his career elsewhere. His return also reunites him with Cowan, who previously managed him during his time at non-league Brackley Town.
Cowan welcomed Gregory back and highlighted his connection with the club and the local area. The Shrewsbury manager also praised the goalkeeper’s ability and said Gregory could have secured another move earlier in the season without his recent circumstances.
Proctor Injury Forces Shrewsbury to Act
Proctor’s injury has left Shrewsbury needing another goalkeeper during a busy period of their League Two campaign. The young goalkeeper had been providing important depth behind the club’s senior options before suffering the setback.
Cowan said Gregory’s familiarity with Shrewsbury made the temporary move particularly useful. The manager described him as a talented and local goalkeeper who already understands the club, its surroundings and the demands of playing for the team.
Shrewsbury Prepare for Unbeaten Crewe
Shrewsbury will travel to Crewe looking for their first away point of the League Two season. The fixture represents their fourth away match of the campaign, with Crewe entering the local derby unbeaten.
The Shrewsbury side will arrive with some positive momentum after securing their second consecutive home victory last week. They defeated Northampton Town in their latest match and will now attempt to carry that form into Saturday’s meeting at Gresty Road.

Two Prospective Owners Receive IRF Approval
Two additional members of the American consortium seeking to take over Shrewsbury have received approval from the Independent Football Regulator. Craig Graham and Will Dotson have now joined Miami-based businessman Scott Davidson in gaining regulatory approval.
Graham already has experience in British football as chairman of Scottish League Two club The Spartans. New York-based financier Dotson is expected to become a director of the reformed Salop board if Roland Wycherley’s proposed sale of Shrewsbury is completed. Former United States international goalkeeper Brad Friedel is still awaiting approval.
