Plymouth Complete Move for Alex Hartridge

sevendayweekender – Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of central defender Alex Hartridge, making him the club’s first addition of the summer transfer window. The 27-year-old will officially join the club on a free transfer after his contract with Burton Albion expires on 1 July.

Hartridge has agreed a two-year contract at Home Park and arrives with extensive experience in League One football.

The move carries added significance because of Hartridge’s history with Exeter City, Plymouth’s long-standing Devon rivals. The defender progressed through Exeter’s academy and made 154 senior appearances for the club before departing in the summer of 2024.

After leaving Exeter, Hartridge joined Burton Albion and enjoyed a productive spell with the club. He later returned to Exeter on loan during the second half of the 2024-25 season. Adding another 18 League One appearances to his record.

Hartridge’s versatility is considered one of his greatest strengths. While he is primarily a central defender, he is also capable of playing at left-back when required.

Plymouth head coach Tom Cleverley believes the defender will provide important depth and flexibility to the squad. He praised Hartridge’s performances last season and highlighted the club’s determination to secure his signature early in the transfer window.

The Plymouth manager said the club had identified specific areas for improvement and viewed Hartridge as an ideal fit.

The timing of the transfer could prove important for Plymouth. Securing signings early in the summer allows players to settle before pre-season training intensifies and gives coaches more time to implement their plans.

Tom Cleverley and Derek Adams Praise Versatile Defender’s Experience

Plymouth director of football Derek Adams welcomed the signing and emphasised the value of Hartridge’s left-sided qualities. Adams believes players with those attributes are difficult to find in the current market.

“Good left-sided players are sometimes hard to come by, and at 27 he has a great deal of experience. While also being in the prime of his career,” Adams said.

The director also pointed to Hartridge’s familiarity with the region as an additional advantage. Having spent much of his career in Devon. The defender is already familiar with the football culture and expectations in the area.

“He knows the area, will complement the players we already have. And I’m pleased we have made him our first signing this close season,” Adams added.

Hartridge now faces the unusual challenge of representing Plymouth after spending much of his career with Exeter City. Rivalries between the two clubs are among the fiercest in the South West, making the transfer particularly noteworthy.

However, Plymouth appear confident that the defender’s experience and professionalism will allow him to adapt quickly to his new surroundings. His ability to operate in multiple defensive roles could prove valuable over a long season.

At 27 years old, Hartridge enters what many consider the peak years of a defender’s career. He combines experience with physical maturity and remains capable of further development.

For Plymouth, the signing marks the beginning of their summer recruitment strategy. The club is expected to continue strengthening the squad as Cleverley prepares for his first full season in charge.

Hartridge’s arrival provides Plymouth with an experienced and versatile defender who already understands football in the region. His familiarity with League One and ability to play across the back line could make him an important figure at Home Park.

As the club’s first signing of the summer, Hartridge’s move signals Plymouth Argyle’s intent to act early in the transfer market and build a squad capable of competing strongly in the upcoming campaign.
