Wilder left Sheffield United after failing to lead the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt. The Blades finished third in the Championship last season, falling 10 points short of automatic promotion. They went on to lose the play-off final to Sunderland at Wembley in May.
Leicester’s interest in Wilder comes as the club look to recover from their recent relegation. The Foxes finished third from bottom in the Premier League, ending the season 13 points adrift of safety. This marked their second drop to the Championship in three years.
The club took over two months after relegation to announce Van Nistelrooy’s exit. As a result, former Leicester midfielder Andy King led their first pre-season game, a 3-1 win over Peterborough United. King stepped in from his coaching role for the friendly at the Seagrave training base.
Wilder, who previously achieved promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United in 2019, brings top-flight experience. His tactical knowledge and record in the Championship make him a credible candidate for the Foxes as they plan a swift return to the top tier.
Rohl, O’Neil and Dyche Also Considered in Managerial Search
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is also under consideration for the Leicester City job. The 36-year-old German has impressed since taking charge at Hillsborough. And the Foxes are said to be keen admirers. However Rohl has a release clause. In his contract that would need to be triggered for a move to happen.
Rohl’s situation at Wednesday remains unclear, as financial instability continues to affect the club. He failed to report for the start of pre-season, and reports indicate that players have not received their wages. This instability could affect Leicester’s decision, as the club prioritizes a stable environment during this transition.
Leicester also considered Sean Dyche, the former manager of Burnley and Everton. Although he featured in early discussions, he now appears to be a less likely choice. The club has also shown interest in Gary O’Neil, who previously led Bournemouth and Wolves and gained recognition for his pragmatic leadership.
