Chelsea Monitor Barco After Strasbourg Departure

sevendayweekender – Valentin Barco has confirmed his departure from Strasbourg as reports continue linking him with a move to Chelsea. The 21-year-old midfielder shared an emotional farewell message after completing an impressive season in Ligue 1.

Sources close to the Argentina international believe he is preparing to join Chelsea before the 2026-27 campaign. However, the Premier League club has not officially confirmed the transfer agreement.

Barco joined Strasbourg from Brighton in January 2025 for a reported £7.9 million fee. The midfielder quickly established himself as an important figure in the French side’s squad during the second half of the season.

His strong performances in Ligue 1 increased interest surrounding his long-term future. Reports indicate Chelsea are expected to offer Barco a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The potential transfer would strengthen Chelsea’s ongoing recruitment strategy under BlueCo ownership. Chelsea and Strasbourg both operate within the same ownership network led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Barco would become the second Strasbourg player to join Chelsea this summer. Striker Emanuel Emegha has already agreed a move to the London club earlier in the transfer window.

The transfer would also represent the 13th deal involving the two clubs since the beginning of last season. BlueCo has frequently used the multi-club structure to support player development and squad planning.

Chelsea are also considering the future of Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders following his successful loan spell. The club continues evaluating several young players connected to Strasbourg and other affiliated teams.

The London side remains active in the transfer market ahead of the new season. Chelsea have already secured pre-agreements for Sporting winger Geovany Quenda and Kairat striker Dastan Satpaev.

Quenda is expected to arrive in a deal worth around £40 million. The Portuguese winger is considered one of Europe’s emerging attacking talents.

Chelsea recently confirmed another major change before the upcoming campaign. Former midfielder Xabi Alonso will officially become the club’s permanent manager on 1 July.

The arrival of Alonso signals the beginning of another rebuilding phase at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea continue focusing heavily on recruiting young players with long-term development potential.

Barco’s versatility could make him a valuable option within Alonso’s tactical plans. The Argentine is capable of operating in midfield and defensive positions while contributing effectively in possession.

His move to Strasbourg helped revive momentum in his career after limited opportunities at Brighton. Regular playing time in France allowed him to improve defensively and adapt to European football at a higher level.

During his farewell statement, Barco thanked several figures who supported his development throughout his time in France. He specifically mentioned Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior and former Brighton coach Gary O’Neil.

“Today I say goodbye to this club,” Barco wrote on social media. “I always gave everything on the pitch in every game for this shirt.”

“I want to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me,” Barco added. “Thank you, Strasbourg.”

Strasbourg benefited significantly from Barco’s technical quality and energy during important league matches last season. His departure creates another major squad change before the new campaign begins.
