sevendayweekender – Burton Albion have signed defender Joe Lewis on a one-year contract following his departure from AFC Wimbledon.
The 26-year-old left Wimbledon at the end of last season after making 121 appearances for the club. Lewis scored nine goals across those appearances while establishing himself as an important player for the Dons.
His spell at Wimbledon also included a successful promotion campaign during the 2024-25 season. The defender helped the club win promotion from League Two through the play-offs.
His experience at that level should provide Burton with additional defensive options and valuable Football League experience. Lewis can bring his previous experience to a Burton squad that continues to prepare for the demands of the upcoming season. His arrival could also strengthen the team’s defensive depth as Burton faces a busy schedule of competitive fixtures.
Lewis now begins a new chapter with Burton after leaving Wimbledon as a free agent. The one-year agreement gives him an opportunity to continue his career while competing for regular first-team football. The move also gives him a chance to prove his ability and establish himself as an important member of Burton’s first-team squad.

Lewis Begins New Chapter After Swansea City Development
Lewis started his professional career with Swansea City but never made a first-team appearance. He subsequently moved away from Swansea in search of senior football opportunities.
The defender went on to have spells with Torquay United and Stockport County. Those experiences provided Lewis with opportunities to develop his game across different levels of English football.
His move to AFC Wimbledon later became an important stage in his career. Lewis made more than 120 appearances for the Dons and contributed nine goals during his time there.
His most notable achievement came when Wimbledon secured League Two promotion through the play-offs.That success gave Lewis valuable experience of competing in high-pressure matches with promotion at stake.
