sevendayweekender – Wycombe Wanderers have signed goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith on a free transfer as they strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
The 30-year-old arrives at Adams Park with extensive experience in the Championship and League One. Having made 172 appearances across spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Barnsley.

Wildsmith spent the latter part of last season with Middlesbrough but did not make a competitive appearance for the club. Before that, he enjoyed a successful spell with Derby County.
His performances during that campaign highlighted his consistency between the posts and made him an important part of Derby’s promotion-winning squad. Wildsmith will now look to draw on that experience at Wycombe as he competes for a regular role in the team’s goalkeeping department. His previous experience at the Championship and League One levels could also provide valuable depth for the squad.
Wildsmith Adds Goalkeeping Depth
The move comes after Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Macey suffered a cruciate ligament injury during pre-season. Leaving the club needing additional cover between the posts.
Wildsmith’s arrival also provides further depth while first-choice goalkeeper Conor Hazard is away on international duty. Wycombe’s director of football strategy Tom Stockwell said the club believes the experienced goalkeeper can help the squad compete across multiple competitions.
“With Conor Hazard away on international duty, and this likely to happen multiple times throughout the season. We thought bringing in a keeper of Joe’s quality gives us the strength in depth to compete across all competitions this season,” Stockwell said.
Wildsmith will now compete for a place in Wycombe’s squad as the club continues its League One campaign.

Wycombe Continue Season Under Interim Head Coach
Wycombe are currently without a permanent manager after Michael Duff was dismissed earlier this month. Interim head coach Tom Hounsell is preparing to lead the team into their upcoming home fixture against Reading. The club will therefore enter the match with Hounsell continuing to oversee first-team affairs while Wycombe consider their options for a permanent replacement.
The Chairboys currently sit 14th in the League One table. With the club hoping Wildsmith’s experience can provide additional competition and cover in the goalkeeping department as the season progresses. The arrival of the experienced goalkeeper gives Wycombe another option between the posts and could increase competition for the starting position.
Wildsmith will also bring experience from previous spells with several English clubs. His familiarity with the demands of the domestic game could prove useful as Wycombe navigate the remainder of the campaign.
