sevendayweekender – Leicester City have signed experienced goalkeeper Dai Cornell on a one-year contract following his departure from Preston North End. The 35-year-old Welshman joins the Foxes as a free agent and provides additional depth between the posts.
Cornell became available after leaving Preston during the summer. The Championship club had offered him a new contract, but the goalkeeper decided to move on after his previous agreement ended.
His arrival at Leicester comes after the club suffered a significant setback in September. Jakub Stolarczyk sustained a season-ending knee injury, leaving Leicester needing another experienced goalkeeper to strengthen their options.
Cornell brings considerable experience to the squad after spending much of his career playing across the English football pyramid. His previous clubs include Ipswich Town and Preston North End, while his career also began at Swansea City.
The Welsh goalkeeper has also played for several other clubs during a career that has taken him to both England and Scotland. His experience includes spells with St Mirren, Portsmouth, Oldham Athletic, Northampton Town and Peterborough United.
Cornell Brings Experience to Leicester
Cornell becomes the 11th club he has been on the books with during his senior career. His extensive experience is expected to provide Leicester with another reliable option while the club deals with Stolarczyk’s long-term absence.
Leicester manager Russell Martin has indicated that Cornell’s contribution could extend beyond his performances as a goalkeeper. His experience and knowledge of the professional game could also benefit the wider squad during the season.
The Foxes are aiming to secure an immediate return to the Championship, making experience particularly valuable as the campaign progresses. Cornell’s arrival gives Martin another senior player who understands the demands of competitive football.
Cornell said he is ready to contribute in whatever way Leicester require. His willingness to support the squad could make his role useful both on the pitch and within the dressing room.
Before joining Leicester, Cornell spent time with Preston, where he had been offered the opportunity to remain with the Championship side. However, he ultimately became a free agent and was available for Leicester to sign outside the regular transfer window.
The goalkeeper joins a Leicester squad that already includes former Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Cornell’s signing therefore gives Leicester additional competition and experience in the position. His arrival also provides Martin with another senior goalkeeper as the club manages its options for the remainder of the campaign.
At 35, Cornell brings a wealth of experience from different clubs and competitions. His career has included time in the Premier League and Championship environments, as well as experience in League One and Scottish football.
