AFC Wimbledon Complete Move for Sessegnon

sevendayweekender – AFC Wimbledon have completed the signing of versatile defender Steven Sessegnon on a two-year contract after his departure from League One side Wigan Athletic.

The 26-year-old joins the Dons as a free agent. Adding experience and versatility to Johnnie Jackson’s squad ahead of the new season.

Sessegnon spent the past three years at Wigan Athletic. Making 49 appearances in all competitions during his time with the Latics.

However, his opportunities became limited during the 2025-26 campaign, when he featured in just 15 matches.

The defender is capable of playing in multiple positions across the back line, offering AFC Wimbledon valuable tactical flexibility as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Sessegnon Looking Forward to Fresh Start

After completing the move, Sessegnon said joining AFC Wimbledon represented the ideal opportunity to revive his career and return to regular first-team football.

“I thought it was the perfect opportunity to get myself going again and show what I’m about,” Sessegnon told the club’s official website. The defender also spoke about his excitement at playing in front of the Wimbledon supporters.

“It’s a lovely stadium to come and play at. I can’t wait to be out there with it full and the fans cheering.” Sessegnon arrives with considerable experience despite still being only 26 years old.

Throughout his career, he has represented several English clubs, including Fulham, Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle, Charlton Athletic, and Wigan Athletic.

He is also the twin brother of Fulham and England international Ryan Sessegnon.

Johnnie Jackson Praises Versatile New Addition

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson believes Sessegnon will strengthen his defensive options thanks to both his experience and versatility.

“Steven’s a really experienced signing that’s played for some big clubs at this level and above,” Jackson said.

“He comes to us with a point to prove – he wants to get back to playing regularly. He brings good versatility; he can play either side as a wing-back or as a full-back.”

Jackson’s comments highlight the qualities that attracted Wimbledon to the defender, particularly his ability to operate on either flank in a variety of tactical systems.

With regular playing time expected to be available, Sessegnon now has the opportunity to rebuild his momentum after a frustrating final season at Wigan.

His arrival provides AFC Wimbledon with an experienced and adaptable defensive option as the club prepares for the challenges of the new campaign, while the player himself will be aiming to establish himself as a key figure in Johnnie Jackson’s squad.
