According to local reports, Melese suffered a medical emergency in the Ethiopian capital. Addis Ababa, on Tuesday while preparing for an upcoming race.
She was taken to hospital but later died despite efforts by medical staff. No further details regarding the cause of death have been publicly released.

Melese built a respected international career in long-distance running and achieved victories at several major marathon events.
